Firefighter Job Description
Brooklyn Fire Department fights fires, responds to medical calls, motor vehicle crashes or anything else that constitutes as an emergency.
Firefighting is not what it used to be, or isn't what you see on television. We are dealing with many hazardous materials that were not thought of before. It you are not properly protected, you could find yourself open to many Hazards.
This department stresses safety. We want you to make your decision to join us on FACTs.
Requirements of our Firefighters
Monthly Meetings are held every forth Thursday of each month, you are expected t take part and offer your opinion on voting matters.
Committee Meetings vary from one committee to another and depend on the time of year. You will be required to serve on one or more committees and attend meetings deemed necessary by the chair person.
Emergency Calls can happen at any time, we expect firefighters to attend any that you are available for regardless of the weather. We also require members to standby at the fire station during emergencies to provide response to other emergencies or help putting equipment and trucks back into service.
Training is provided every Monday evening. It is vital to you and all firefighters to attend as many as possible. Outside training (fire school courses) can be provided. When a firefighter does not attend training, they are more often a hindrance than a help.
Funraising is not mandatory but encouraged. The fire department auxiliary is responsible to operate the Civic Centre and any surplus of fundraising could be provided to the fire department.
There are numerous other small things you will come to find out if you are accepted as a fellow firefighter.
When you join the fire department you are volunteering. However, once you are an active member you have committed your time and will, and at times, have heavy requirements placed on you. You have a job to do. You will be appreciated by fellow members, but the public will mostly recognize your mistakes (however small they may be). Your reward for becoming a firefighter will only be from within yourself.
You will be required to keep an attendance average of fifty percent or higher. This is reviewed from time to time and reported to you.
We look forward to meeting with you to learn your views and interests in our department
